THE PROPOSAL

Our Engagement

08-09-2022

Jacob: I left for a weekend bachelor party for my brother-in-law David that was in Miami. I thought that while I was down there, it’d be a great time to see my buddy Rob. I planned my flights to account for a few more days, send my flight info to Abby, we’re good to go. Rob then asks me not many days later if I could change my flights around because of schedule conflicts. I do so, but opt not to tell Abby! Sneaky! Abby: I usually don't do that well when I'm alone for long periods of time. You know how it goes, all loud noises are the monsters coming to get me, and the ghost in my closet only makes itself known when I'm alone. My boyfriend was in Florida for the next week of sleeps, and I missed him already. Jacob: I left Wednesday night and flew back Monday night. I had sat on the tarmac for nearly two hours waiting for Spirit to do its thing, I got to my car just after 1 a.m. I was able to make it to Vail until I had to pull off into a parking lot and sleep in my car. I got home after 8 in the morning, took a shower, ate a bowl of cereal, and played a little with Ollie. I accidentally left my towel hung up in the bathroom and the vacuum out; Abby only noticed the vacuum. I left before lunch to buy some roses and daisies, Abby’s favorite chocolates and incense, and lunch for myself because I was running on fumes. Abby: After a solid morning of work, I decided to come home for lunch. Jacob had been texting me earlier and offered to order delivery for my lunch, (how sweet!), but I had leftovers at home. All was well in the house when I came home until I walked into the guest room. The vacuum was out! Now, I KNOW I had put away the vacuum after using it the night before. I'm starting to convince myself that this "ghost" is real.. Jacob: I know Abby’s schedule. She leaves for work at 8 in the morning, comes home for lunch at 11:30, might come home questionably early, and has evening plans to hangout with her girls. Not today. I was texting Abby in the morning trying to get more details of what her lunch plans were and to keep throwing her off my scent. After lunch, I spread big and small petals from our bedroom, through the living room, and out the front door. I set up our coffee table with a chocolate charcuterie board topped with roses and little daisies. Abby could show up at any time. Abby: I knew my work schedule for the afternoon was pretty flexible, but I had a lot of work to do for the new school year. I decided to stay working in person all the way until 4pm that day even though I could have gone home sooner. Jacob: I started the petals outside where our apartment sidewalk begins. The roses continued up the stairs and around the railing, ultimately leading up to petals in a big heart shape which was where I stood to do my thing. Our downstairs neighbor happened to walk out and see what was happening and she gave me a handful of wilting roses which really darkened and filled out my trail. When Abby arrived, she nonchalantly got a video of the whole thing! Abby was so surprised and visibly shocked to see me, and it made me the happiest man in the world when she screamed “YES!” and she jumped and hopped around. Abby: When I arrived home from work that day, I sincerely thought the ghost had to be real. My living room window was cracked open! There is no way I didn’t notice that before. But then, my eyes gaze left to find a single rose in a vase on my balcony. I slowly get out of my car, heart beating with confusion and excitement. I see a path of rose petals leading up to my apartment door. I walk to my door to find my boyfriend, whom I thought was in Florida, standing in a heart of rose petals to ask my hand in marriage. I was totally surprised! I still can’t believe he was able to pull such a fast one on me, but it was the happiest day of my life thus far!
