We met in 2013 during our first semester of freshman year at Hampton University. On the night before freshman curfew ended, we hung out for the first time and talked for hours on a bench by the waterfront on campus. We were all told during freshman orientation that if you walk down the length of the waterfront with someone you will marry them. That night when Jordan picked me up from my dorm, he asked if I had heard this as we approached the start of the waterfront. I said yes and Jordan suggested we walk a few apart until we got to the bench "so we didn't jinx it". Obviously the awkward distance between us did not block the fate of the Hampton University waterfront.
People always say “when you know you know”. It’s crazy because I actually knew almost from the first moment we met that she and I clicked in a way that I’d never experienced before. I thought it was “puppy love” but here we are almost a decade later doing everything we said we’d do. So in February 2022, I asked Lauren's father if I could have her hand in marriage and I started planning the proposal. I knew exactly how I wanted to do it and with the help of our family and friends I managed to keep everything a secret from Lauren, even though she usually hates surprises, and the day was perfect. Lauren was out with her friends while we decorated the rooftop of our apartment complex. When she arrived home we told her I was with a few friends on the rooftop having a bbq. When she opened the door there was a trail of rose petals and photos from our favorite memories over the last 10 years leading to where I was standing in front of a sign that read "Marry Me?" After the proposal we went to a restaurant where both of our families and friends were there to celebrate with us.
