How We Met

New York, New York at The New School | 2017

Jack's Version | "We met on the first day of class at The New School, Fall Semester. First class of the first semester but we didn't get to know each other until after the semester finished. Madison wrote me a very nicely worded email asking to help her with her music. I said of course, and we made plans later that week. Madison came over to my apartment and we had a great time. We started talking and we didn't stop talking until two in the morning when I sent her home. Pretty much every day since then we've spent together." Madison's Version | "I met Jack in my first class at The New School. I was eighteen and just got to college. I met him on the first day. We presented our music in class and I recognized one of the artists that he produced tracks for. I thought Jack looked like he might be the kindest and most Patagonia-wearing looking person at The New School. For some reason, I told my roommates at my dorm that there was someone in my class that I could see myself with and they encouraged me to reach out to him. I drafted my email to Jack and read it to my roommates right after we got back from winter break. I actually emailed the wrong Jack, we had two in our class. I didn't know Jack's name was John. The other Jack emailed me back and I never got back to him. I finally got in touch with the right Jack. We talked on his steps for a while before going inside. When we went inside, we sat on his floor and talked about so many different things. He asked if I wanted a ginger beer or lemonade. I said lemonade because I didn't like ginger beer and he was so nervous he gave me ginger beer. He told me that he picked it up when I left and it was completely full. The first night I met Jack was magical. It was as if the whole world stopped for us to collide. I asked him a few days later if he wanted to go to La Bonbonierre in the West Village and we got pancakes. He switched into a class I was in, waited for me after class every day to go to lunch. Now we are getting married."

When You Knew

Jack's Version | "We were hanging out at my apartment after class. There was a mariachi band coming through the open window in my apartment. It was very surreal and I knew I loved her." Madison's Version | "The first night. I knew when I walked up to the steps and saw him standing there. It was the most natural thing that's ever happened to me. I took at trip to Michigan the next week to go skiing and I couldn't stop thinking about Jack. That feeling was cemented by the mariachi band."

The Proposal

Jack's Version | "Madison's little brother, Chandler, came to visit us. Chandler (a Gen-Z) has an online friend that lives in New Jersey. We were thinking it would be nice to take a trip for Chandler to meet his internet friend. I had plans to ask Madison to marry me, and to use the New Jersey trip to propose to Madison in New York. We go to New York and Madison has no clue what is going on. She is simply thinking of going to get coffee. We set off to go to Abraco, our favorite coffee shop, on my old street (7th Street between 1st and 2nd Ave.) When we get off the subway, as each block passes, I get a little faint. We get to Abraco and I pretty much blacked out. I was really excited. Madison was probably thinking, "What the heck is wrong with Jack?" Madison tries to get us a table to sit down, and I say, "Why don't we just walk?" We walk up to my apartment to sit on the stoop for a minute. I was very very nervous at that point. Then, in front of my old apartment, I asked Madison to marry me and she said of course! And now, we are to be wed."
