In Maddy's words: We met the new-old-fashioned way, through a dating app. We'd both set New Year's resolutions to "get back out there," but fortunately didn't have to suffer through too much swiping, as he was one of my first matches and I quickly stopped paying attention to anyone else! We also happened to live only a few blocks from each other, so I like to think we would have found each other in the ice cream aisle at Target eventually... For our first date, we met for dinner at a Filipino restaurant and talked for three solid hours about food, travel, and our different cultural backgrounds (Tin was born and raised in Burma, and I'm from Utah). He was shocked when he walked me home and discovered I lived right down the street, which was good because it was the coldest night of the year. He couldn't even sneak a doorstep kiss because my teeth were chattering so much. Luckily it wasn't his only chance.
Tin's side of the story: The proposal happened on my birthday. I asked her to get opera tickets at Kennedy Center with the thought that proposing on the rooftop at sunset would be beautiful. When the day came, I wanted to get there early--but got pushed back because the show didn't start until 7:30 pm, and she wanted more time to get ready... The uber driver took us to the wrong direction so it added an extra layer of nervousness to my planning and organizing for the proposal. But I stayed calm and collected (which was unusual). When we finally got to the rooftop, I could not find anybody to take our pictures. It was already so cold and windy, so she wanted to just take a selfie and get back down to the lobby. Luckily, just in time these 3 guys came up for rooftop pictures on the other side of the entrance. I told her to stay put and ran towards them. It was a good thing that they were on the other end because I was able to give the photo instructions and tell them about the proposal on the way back to her. We took normal pictures on the first round. The instructions for the second picture were to face away from the camera--and that's when I went down on my knee. The moment when she said "yes" was the greatest feeling and happiest yet in my world! Everything was perfect with the sunset and beautiful scenery around DC. It was the way I've always dreamed it would go down (except the cold)!
