The Sacramento music scene is relatively small, so Patrick and Lys spent a year or two playing and hanging around the same shows. In 2008, Lys hitched a ride up to see his band play in Chico and they had their first actual conversation over some brewery food with a group of our mutual friends. Their bands continued to play together (40+ times since then) and the two of them continued to hang around the same places, but it wasn't until one of Lys' bands recorded with Patrick in 2010 (they've made over 12+ records together since then) that their real friendship began. Patrick and Lys continued to build their friendship over the next six years until one day she invited him over and made very fancy nachos (she doesn't even like nachos). The next day, he came back. And then he just kept coming back for the next 6 years. Here's to many more decades of each coming back, growing, loving, making music, and asking "What should we eat?".
In 2018, Patrick planned a trip to Joshua Tree National Park. He booked a beautiful, eclectic Airbnb that looked to be some hybrid of a stone castle and desert hippie commune. We brought the dogs, did some puzzles, visited a cactus garden, climbed a crater, and drove through what looked to be the set of Gummo. On our second day, Patrick pulled into a parking lot and asked Lys to come check out some cool rock structures. She went to get the dogs out of the truck and Patrick said, "No, just leave them - we will be right back". In true Lys fashion, she didn't listen and made a whole scene trying to get them leashed up while multiple nearby dogs were barking at them. They explored the area and climbed around. Patrick then summoned Lys over to take a photo together. She noticed that a video was rolling and kept saying, "It's a video!" while trying to push the button. Luckily Patrick's arms are much longer than hers, so she wasn't able to reach the phone. Amidst the chaotic video and tangle of leashes, Patrick drops to the dirt on one knee. Neither of them can remember what he said because there was a mutual emotional blackout, but they emerged from the rocks with a ring on Lys' finger and smiles on both of their faces.
