If you decide to drive yourself and rent a vehicle, note that even though you think you are getting a good deal.......Mexico has a mandatory insurance of $200+ dollars that will be applied to your reservation when you arrive. Good news is that some credit cards include car rental insurance, which means you can have this fee waived! They will require you to provide evidence of the insurance. So plan ahead and reach out to your credit card company to send you a letter in advance. You will need to have sent it via email or present the printed version for their records. *Also if renting car out of Chetumal, be sure to plan ahead as it is a small airport.
