“Hi I’m Liz, I like avocados.” These fateful 28 characters reached Jason’s OKCupid inbox in June of 2015. As they arranged a first date- a simple hike on a nearby trail- Jason and Liz had no way of knowing that their lives would both be changed forever. Liz also had no way of knowing that Jason- who had an avocado pun for a username and a profile picture of himself playing the ukelele, neither liked avocados nor played the ukelele. As their relationship grew, Liz and Jason discovered their shared love for hiking, adventure, science, food, fractal geometry, and the natural world. They bonded over identifying plants, mushrooms, and fossils during their walks in the woods. Little by little, their two separate worlds became one. Before they knew it, Liz and Jason had fallen in love. During their nine years together they adventured across the world, touring New Zealand, Belize, Switzerland, Peru, and more. When they traveled to France last year, Jason proposed to Liz with a sapphire resin ring he had made himself in lab. When he did, Liz pulled an Uno Reverse card from her pocket and proposed right back- revealing a tungsten ring with a band of meteorite. Liz knew that when Jason was a child, he had dreamed of being an astronaut. With this ring, Jason could always carry a little piece of outer space with him. Liz and Jason are now finishing their PhDs at Vanderbilt together. But they still have plenty of time outside of research to make each other laugh, play games together, and learn how to dance. However, we will leave the judgement of whether we can dance or not up to you. We invite all of you to join us in Music City to join with family and friends to celebrate the next chapter of our lives together. Adventure awaits!
