Take in the beautiful view of the Charleston Harbor and the beautiful Antebellum-style mansions along the sea wall. Fun history: The Battery was built as a defensive seawall and is estimated to have been initially built sometime in the early 1700’s. Though what we see today was not there until the wall was refortified during the War of 1812, in which case the area became generally known as “the Battery.” From here on out the wall would be rebuilt numerous times. Most notably in 1850, when what we see today was first erected.
Fun history: These Colonial homes (built in the 1740s) used to be considered "slums", but during the Great Depression, a woman that owned one of these homes decided to paint the outside pastel pink to brighten the area. Her neighbors decided to follow suit and now these homes, now called Rainbow Row, are some of the most iconic structures in the city!
Fun history: The dungeon of this building is the only place where you can see the original battery wall of old Charles Towne!
