In 2018 at GVSU Ryan and Leilani were both a part of Campus Ministries and decided to apply for the serve global leadership team. While serve global made the first introduction, Ryan and Leilani spent time in different friend groups and didn't get to know each other right away... however... Ryan secretly had a crush on the girl across the room. Two years later, Ryan finally decided to "shoot his shot" after getting Leilani's number from a mutual friend (thank you Brynne!) and they went on their first date in June of 2020. Ry and Lei have been on this life adventure together ever since!

On January 5, 2021, in the midst of a blizzard, Ryan completely surprised Leilani with a winter wonderland proposal. Lei woke up to a snow day from school and Ryan said he wanted to take her out for a special lunch for their anniversary. Leilani made things difficult by requesting a "cozy day at home reading." Eventually after lots of persuading, Ryan convinced Lei and she made her way to Jenison. On the way to “lunch,” Ryan was driving and took an unexpected turn to the Riverview Airport (a special repeat date spot). Ryan played their favorite song and they slow danced amongst the snowfall. He walked Lei to the river, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him! Later, Ryan surprised Leilani with a special engagement party with some family and friends. It was a crazy day with blizzards, changing plans, and a flat tire, but it was so special and definitely unforgettable.
