Following in his father's footsteps, Tyler matched into the Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology Residency in 2020. He would be leaving for Minnesota soon, but he had one last year in Chicago where he would complete his internship at NorthShore University Hospital in Evanston, IL. Liz was already a veteran third year internal medicine resident at NorthShore when Tyler started. In fact, when they met for the first time in a work room at the hospital, Liz informed Tyler that she would soon be chief resident the following year. Tyler knew this meant "off limits," but he still thought Liz was cute. Both Liz and Tyler were putting in long hours at the hospital, especially in the COVID units as the pandemic was carrying on. Liz could not help but notice Tyler standing out above the other interns (he would later go on to win intern of the year). Putting seniority aside, they began to talk and go on secret dates. It did not take long for their scandal to break, but they soon gained the eager support of their co-residents. Romance in the time of COVID was a bright spot, after all! The rest of the story is history. Tyler and Liz are both continuing their medical careers at Mayo Clinic where Tyler is an ophthalmology resident and Liz is a preventive medicine fellow. Life is good together with their goofy dachshund, Hopper and moody cat, Jelly.
