A handfasting is traditionally a "ceremony of betrothal" that was done in the British Isles between the 12th to 17th century. In Scotland, it was done prior to a church wedding to mark the beginning of a year-long "trial marriage," after which the couple could choose to be legally married or go their separate ways. Today, handfastings are often incorporated into a modern wedding ceremony in appreciation of traditional Celtic customs.
