A Fairy-Elf Queen and a Bear

Even When I couldn't Say it, in my Heart I Knew I Loved You - Neil Simon, Fools (Lenya Zubritsky)

Contrary to popular assumption, this is actually the second time Melody and Cody have been married. It all began in January of 2014 in a refurbished storefront theatre in Glendale, AZ. Unbeknownst to all in the audition room, magic was brewing. As Melody focused on her lines, preparing every fine detail of her hopeful audition, she couldn't help but notice the silly, fun-loving goober across the way. "How could someone who tells so many jokes be so charming," she wondered. But, he was captivating. She leaned into him as they walked into the callback together and declared these fateful words: "You're weird...but I like you." That was it. That's the phrase that gave Cody a shot of lightning. What Melody didn't know, was that Cody already knew who she was from longer ago. When he saw her in elf ears, wielding a pair of swords in the previous year's production of She Kills Monsters, he was smitten. But, what did he know about being smitten? She was far too cool, too poised, too beautiful to actually want the affections of a bear who spoke in movie quotes and loved pizza. But fate is little more than magic in waiting; their spark was undeniable. They were cast together in Neil Simon's Fools as Mr. and Mrs. Zubritsky, a pair of overly caring Russian villagers who just wanted the best for their daughter. Rehearsal after rehearsal, Cody's knowledge that he really, really, really liked Melody grew. But still, he thought, "No way do fairy-elves think bears are cool." And yet, every time Melody looked into his eyes, she wondered, then thought, then felt, "This bear... there is something so wonderful in this bear that I really, really like too." An unexpected courtship began to take shape: shared car rides to the theatre, a rescue mission of green tea and oranges, and Irish pubs (that we didn't think were dates at the time but, in reality, we knew they were ;) ). The week before Fools was set to open, the spark between them was so sparkly that you could call it a star and neither could deny that this bear and this elf... they were meant to be together. It wasn't easy, it wasn't always pretty, and there were plenty of ups and downs. Yet, in a tale that literally could be at least 8 seasons worth of romantic comedy material, they fell in love in the way only a Bear and a Fairy-Elf can. After countless rehearsals for shows they wanted to be a part of because the other was there, after a night of Jurassic Winter Wonderland (her choice), entire evenings devoted to murder shows, popcorn, pizza, and nature documentaries, after the construction of a snowman in Colorado and a massive blanket fort in the living room, after play readings in Valdez, AK, Cody knew he could not- no, would not, take another journey without Melody. And she knew in the fiber of her being, in her heart and soul that she loved this silly old bear most of all.
