The night was December 21st, 2011. Michael and Kaitlyn had been invited over for their mutual friend’s, Christin’s, 21st birthday. Michael was still under 21, but had been recruited to be a DD for the evening’s festivities (shocking, I know). As he was talking to some friend’s, in walked Kaitlyn, not knowing a single person, but ready to have a good time. As soon as he saw her, Michael knew that he needed to talk to her more. After briefly chatting, Michael knew he wanted to see her again. For four years, Michael and Kaitlyn saw each other at Penn State for football games and at the annual Quigley Water Polo tournament (even though Michael had no idea what was going on). Despite always having a good time together, distance and a TWO YEAR age gap kept the two apart. Finally, after taking a new teaching position down in Richmond, Michael and Kaitlyn met up at the PSU Homecoming game in 2015, and something finally clicked. After a few months of regular chatting, Michael and Kaitlyn officially started dating on January 3rd and have been living happily ever after since.
In the summer of 2018, Michael and Kaitlyn’s families were going down to the beach back-to-back weeks, 30 minutes apart, and Michael knew that the timing was right. The day before the proposal, Michael and Kaitlyn took their 6-month old puppy, Duck, for a walk on the beach. It had been raining all week up to that point, but on that morning, there was finally a break in the clouds. As Michael, Kaitlyn, and Duck turned around to head home, a beautiful double rainbow appeared out over the ocean, an ideal setting for a proposal…and Michael didn’t have the ring. The next day, after a long day of bocce ball and Viking Chess, the time had come for the big proposal…except Kaitlyn wasn’t done playing. If you haven’t heard, the Knott’s are a bit competitive, and playing the condensed version of a game is out of the question. After some convincing, Kaitlyn finally agreed to head home for dinner, and then afterwards the couple went for a walk on the beach. As the sun was setting, there was a brief clearing on the beach. Michael got down on one knee and asked Kaitlyn to marry him, and she made him the happiest / luckiest guy in the world.
