Lake Placid hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 1932 and 1980. The Olympic venues are collectively known as the Lake Placid Legacy Sites and include the Olympic Center, the Olympic Jumping Complex, Mt. Van Hoevenberg, and Whiteface Mountain. Today, these venues continue to host visitors and events, and serve as a training ground for many sports.
Farmhouse Snowmobiling offers guided tours through the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake wilderness. Great for beginners or experienced snowmobiles.
The Wild Center is a natural history center located on 115 acres of property in the town of Tupper Lake, which is about a 30 minute drive from Lake Placid. It consists of interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits exploring the natural world of the Adirondacks. The Wild Center is home to more than 900 live Adirondack animals including turtles, otters, porcupines, ravens, snakes and fresh-water fish. The Wild Center also includes includes Wild Walk, a treetop trail of bridges and platforms that features a four-story tree house and a human-size spiderweb and offers stunning views of the Adirondack Mountains. Winter hours are typically Friday through Sunday from 10am - 5pm. Reservations are recommended.
Toboggan down a 30-foot tall, ice-covered chute onto frozen Mirror Lake. The Toboggan chute is located at the southern end of Mirror Lake near the Golden Arrow and across from the post office. Current admission prices are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students (cash only) and include unlimited rides per session.
Ranked one of the top ski resorts on the east coast, Whiteface offers 90 trails and 11 lifts as well as the greatest vertical drop in the east. Whiteface is located in the town of Wilmington, 13 miles from Lake Placid.
