How We Met

Pool Noodles to First Date

Kiara's side of the story: It all started on the first day of survival swim class at West Point. I (Kiara) was placed in an elementary-level swimming class, which I thought must have been a mistake since I've always been able to swim well enough and get by in the pool. But hey, I couldn't complain. Swimming with pool noodles and taking this daunting course at a slow pace was just fine with me. However, Cody desperately needed help because, on Day 1 of class, he was swallowing water and flailing in the pool trying to keep his head above water (he might say otherwise). Once he exited the pool, he watched me execute the 150-yard swim with ease. After the first class, he asked if I could come in on the weekends to help him with the basics. Soon those Sunday swimming sessions transitioned to dates outside of the pool and the rest is history. Now I know that being put in that class was far from a mistake but was the start of a perfectly arranged love story. Cody's side of the story: Alright so I wasn't a GREAT swimmer, but I wasn't *that* bad. We actually were supposed to have different instructors and be in completely different pools for the duration of swim, but our classes were merged because a pool broke down and was being repaired. So there I was, goggles on face ready to fight the water. Then BOOM! I see Kiara walk in and I knew God was up to something. We had been chatting back and forth for a bit, and I definitely had an interest in her. We liked similar things, I knew she had a passion for Christ, and her brother Grant (a fellow cadet at the time) and I were already acquainted from our lifting sessions in the gym. It just happens to turn out that I was pretty below average at swimming and she was very above average. I asked her for help in swimming because (A) she was really good at swimming and I was tired of drinking pool water, and (B) I liked her and thought there was something between us that could evolve into more than just friends. The rest is history, and has culminated with what you are currently reading. She is my person, and we hope you can join us on our big day as we celebrate our life together and the people who have helped us along the way.
