La Nyka first caught my eye at a leadership meet and greet in 2008. We connected via social media and met often in other virtual group events. She intrigued me, but I couldn’t quite put in words what made her exceptional in my eyes. Through persistence, we built the foundations of our friendship. In annual birthday greetings, congratulations on major life milestones, and a few conversations here and there we built a shared admiration and respect across distance. As our friendship grew, I observed how she matured. More importantly, I also matured. As I overcame significant life challenges, I began to show her my evolution and growth. Our pivot year was 2019. Timing, place and maturity were all aligned. We were both ready. And in that year, we began to make our history together.

In 2008, Kevin called me after a meet and greet. I was a little shy, and not knowing what to do, I gave the phone to Zaphia. After many texts and calls to just say "hey", a few happy birthdays, and congratulations in between, a friendship blossomed. Somehow, annually, we always connected. In 2019, a familiar face popped up in my text messages. I was glad to reconnect! This time, our interaction was different. He was patient, kind, honest and so genuine. I said to my mom, "I think I like this man!”. I didn't know what to expect, so I had no expectations at all. I did not reveal my heart to him. My phone rang very early at 7 AM one day. It was none other than Kevin. The timing was perfect. I said, "Hey, I love you too.” And that was the continuation of our journey to today…
