Raphie and Kevia met through mutual friends at a birthday party at the Gansevoort Hotel Rooftop in New York City. They remained friends until their first date in June 2013 where they dined at the restaurant, Grotto, in the Lower East Side.

Raphie proposed to Kevia half an hour before they left their apartment for Portugal. Kevia's brother was staying in their apartment while they were away so she was busy gathering sheets and towels for him out of the wardrobe. While Kevia was distracted, Raphie snuck up behind her, got down on one knee and proposed.
