When I met Kimberly in 2014, my attraction for her was completely unexpected. It wasn’t the first time that I had seen her, but it was the first time we had actually worked together. She was my supervisor that night and I was assigned as the 4th floor movement officer on the East side. At first, it was all business but as time went on, our bond rapidly grew into a tight friendship. The more time we spent, the more talking we did, and the more experiences we shared together- the closer we got. A few years in, we were in a full-fledged relationship. We had all the ingredients to be the best of friends, but ended up being much more. Our relationship was natural, innocent, and built on pure friendship. I never imagined myself loving Kimberly the way I do, but now, I cant imagine my life without her.
The 1st time I ever remember seeing Kendra, she was walking through the doors of unit K43 at TGK. We were both on the midnight shift; I was the supervisor & she was the movement officer. The funny thing was, most people on the midnight shift looked like they had just rolled out of bed & drug themselves to work. Not Kendra! There she was… Perfect hair, perfect eyebrows, nails done, a wrist full of Pandora bracelets, and a long Pandora necklace to match (how fitting- the charm was a royal crown). She was in TOTAL violation of the uniform policy, but what could I say?… She was a miniature princess with a gorgeous smile. As the night went on, she was the model officer- everything I needed, she had already done. Thinking back, she probably finished early so she could have time to talk to me (smirk). At some point, she started a conversation with me about her younger brother. He lived an alternative lifestyle & she had concerns about him being around her sons (ages 7 & 14); they were young & impressionable. During the whole conversation, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was her way of breaking the ice or a build-up to asking me if I was into women. As she spoke, it seemed like she was smiling with both her lips & her eyes. But she had a ring on her finger- I was so confused. She was obviously attractive & I was clearly intrigued, but I would never step outside of my professional boundary. Can you say Sexual Harassment (LOL)? The conversation lasted until the end of the shift & we even spoke for a while in the parking lot. All the way home, while lying in bed- trying to fall asleep, all I could think about was Her. Luckily, Kendra was thinking about me too; she found me on Facebook! That same morning, we ended up chatting until we both fell asleep. That was the morning of December 2nd, 2014. The following day (December 3rd, 2014) she gave me her number & we’ve been talking & gazing into each other’s eyes ever since. I’m so glad I went to work that night!
Kimberly planned an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" holiday dinner at The Capital Grille with a selected group of our closest friends. Of course, no one followed directions! Our bougie friends are way too cute to wear ugly Christmas sweaters, but surprisingly, everyone was on time- that almost never happens. I guess that's why we're all so close; we're just alike. At the last minute, I tried every trick there was to get out of going to dinner, but Kimberly wouldn't let me. We're both homebodies and by that time, I just wanted to stay home, cuddle, and watch TV. But Kimberly was persistent; she convinced me that we couldn't let our friends down, especially since she planned the event. We arrived at our destination, met our guests, and shared a few laughs before we were seated. As the evening continued, we all ordered our meals and everything seemed normal. It wasn’t until later that I noticed something out of the ordinary… The food came out; the manager greeted everyone at the table; and the waiter served everyone their delicious looking entrees. But I didn’t receive my food… Instead of the waiter serving me, the manager placed a single plate in front of me with a small red, velour, box on it. I must have had the most confused look on my face. Where was my meal? & What was this box? Baffled- I looked at the manager, waiting for an explanation, but all he had was this big smile on his face. It was at that moment, I noticed several other employees gathering around the table; all of our dinner guests had their phones out (either recording or taking pictures); and I heard all these little voices saying, “open it!”. I looked at Kimberly- she was smiling as usual… I opened the box and Kimberly proposed!
