Extra Tip: Many are flying into England, Heathrow Airport and then taking a hopper into Italy. Can be great to be cost effective. 1. Florence Airport (FLR) – Approximately 1.5–2 hours by car. The closest major airport to Montalcino, offering flights from many European cities. 2. Pisa Airport (PSA) – Approximately 2–2.5 hours by car. A good option with more international flight connections. 3. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) – Approximately 2.5–3 hours by car. Ideal for long-haul flights from the U.S. or other international destinations.

Train to Montalcino

Taking trains to Montalcino (or nearby) from the major airports in Italy, including recommended routes: 1. From Florence Airport (FLR) Step 1: Take the tram from Florence Airport to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) train station (about 20–30 minutes). Step 2: From Firenze SMN, take a train to Buonconvento (closest station to Montalcino) or Siena (a larger hub with more taxi options). To Buonconvento: Change trains in Siena. Journey time: 2–3 hours. To Siena: Direct trains take about 1.5 hours. Step 3: From Buonconvento or Siena, take a taxi or private transfer to Montalcino (30–40 minutes). 2. From Pisa Airport (PSA) Step 1: Take the PisaMover shuttle from the airport to Pisa Centrale train station (5–10 minutes). Step 2: From Pisa Centrale, take a train to Siena (most routes require a transfer in Empoli). Journey time: 2–2.5 hours. Step 3: From Siena, take a taxi or private transfer to Montalcino. 3. From Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) Step 1: Take the Leonardo Express train from the airport to Roma Termini train station (about 30 minutes). Step 2: From Roma Termini, take a train to Buonconvento or Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. To Buonconvento: This route typically requires a transfer in Chiusi or Grosseto. Journey time: 3–4 hours. To Chiusi-Chianciano Terme: A larger train hub that is 1–1.5 hours from Montalcino by car or taxi. Journey time: 1.5–2 hours. Step 3: From Buonconvento or Chiusi, take a taxi or private transfer to Montalcino. Tips for Traveling by Train - Book in Advance: Especially for long-distance trains to save money & guarantee seats. - Validate Your Ticket: For regional trains, stamp your ticket at the green machines before boarding.
