Kayla was visiting her high school besties Diana and Chloe in San Francisco when she ran into Rob at a party. They ended up talking for hours, and it felt like they had known each other for years. Their groups were about to separate for their respective bars and Kayla saw him fumble with his phone to get her number (she remembers him opening the calculator app but he denies this) so she grabbed it and put it in. While they were out that night, she made sure to thoroughly vet him through his friends, and after exclusively glowing reviews, she decided to "forget" her jacket at his place for an excuse to see him the next day. They spent the rest of the weekend together with their crew and knew by the end that this was going to be something special. And it's always a good idea to begin a long-distance relationship weeks before starting medical school, right? Seven years, a cross country move, and one highly vocal Aussie puppy later, the rest is history.
Maintaining the element of surprise during residency proved challenging, so they agreed upon setting aside four Saturdays where Kayla would avoid being on call, wear something cute, and be ready for "something to happen." On the first possible day, Rob drove her to the Cleveland Botanical Garden, a place they had talked about visiting for years. Despite being cool, calm, and collected on the drive over (including telling the parking attendant, "I'm Rob," and miraculously not having to pay for parking), she sensed a shift in his demeanor as soon as they started walking. And by walking, I mean absolutely booking it, him holding her hand, not saying a word, with an intense look of focus on his face. She obviously started making fun of him, knowing what was happening, at which point he decided to troll her and pretend to tie his shoe a few times etc... Finally they came upon a beautiful bridge, and he got down on one knee for real and asked her to marry him. Easiest yes of her life.
