After failed attempts at multiple dating websites, Kayla finally created a Match account. She was pretty laid back and didn't expect much to come from it. Upon receiving a message from Alex, Kayla turned down another date to have a first date with him. They had their first date at Babylon Bean coffee shop. Surprisingly, Alex didn't say a whole lot and Kayla nervously babbled about random conversation points. At the coffee shop it was karaoke night and they listened to a guy who was a horrible rapper which added some entertainment to the night. Upon leaving the coffee shop, Alex walked Kayla to her car and they shared a first kiss. Kayla called her mom on the way home and said "I'm in trouble, I really like him" and the rest is history!
The day before Alex proposed, Kayla was in a cranky mood. Her work project with her students had been cancelled and she was disappointed- she was supposed to take them kayaking to do a beach clean up on Young's Island. Of course, she quickly planned another gardening project for the next morning to make up for the kayaking. Alex had to navigate all the changes for the day to plan on proposing. Kayla went to her mom's house on Saturday and she somehow convinced Kayla to get manicures- Kayla's cousin was home from New Hampshire and actually had to attend a wedding that evening so Kayla didn't think anything of it. After being in a bad mood and getting emotional over silly things that went wrong for that weekend, Alex said his parents planned on coming to Stony Brook on Sunday after Kayla was done working to see Avalon Park- they had never been and he thought it would be fun to show them around the area. Kayla's mom also joined (their parents have gotten together before) and met up at Harmony Vineyard in Stony Brook-one of Kayla's favorite places. Alex and Kayla went down by the water to take a picture before sunset (it was getting late in the day already) and that is when Alex got down on one knee and asked Kayla if he had the privilege of spending the rest of his life with her. Kayla was shocked and had the ugly cry- even two strangers cried from witnessing it! Kayla's dad and grandma were waiting at the table when they walked back up and the whole family went to dinner while Kayla and Alex called their friends and family to tell them the news!
