They met on a whim, through an online dating site. One November Friday, Katie was skimming through profiles, becoming more bored and dissatisfied with what she saw. Then she stumbled upon Evan's, thinking he was cute, she clicked on him thus creating the contact . Evan, also finding her pretty, sent her a message in response and they spent the rest of the night chatting, about everything: hobbies, career ambitions, and the future . Katie then asked for Evan's phone number, as it was getting into the morning hours, so they could continue to talk while Katie was at work the following day. After a few scheduling conflicts, they went on their first date on November 18, 2016. By December 1, 2016, they made their relationship official in the glow of their first Christmas tree, fully decorated and shimmering in a warm white light.

As it has become a tradition, within their relationship, they spend December 1st together doing a Christmas related activity, including buying an ornament each year. This particular year, they went to an outdoor Christmas market, followed by a romantic dinner for two and some Christmas shopping. Upon arriving home, Katie went to hang their new ornament on the tree. She turned to find Evan standing behind her. He asked her to sit down, next to the tree, as he knelt down on one knee. After speaking what was in his heart, Evan asked the famous four-word questions, and Katie with tears happily streaming down her face said yes!
