People are dying to get in! (Designed by F. L. Olmstead) Fantastic views of Oakland and San Francisco. Wander the cemetery - it is like a park! Make sure to go by Millionaire's Row for the most ostentatious mausaleums.
Where we are getting married! Great museum with exhibits on Art, Natural Science, and History of California and Oakland. Recommend exploring the museum on your own!
Walk the path and park areas around the lake for wonderful views. Check out the Grand Lake farmers market on Saturdays behind the Pergola at Splash Pad Park on the north east corner of the lake. Bike share, bus, and walkable from 19th or Lake Merritt BART stations.
Our favorite wine shop in town. Great selection, friendly staff. Do a tasting.
Collection of food purveyors with great selections.
One of our favorite book stores. Great selection of new and used books as well as music and other things. Located along Grand Ave near the "Grand Lake" dual commercial streets of Grand and Lakeshore Avenues.
Walk around the lake, hang out on the small beach, and check out the exhibits on the Hayward Fault (the park sits right above the fault!). Afterward head to Rockridge for food and shopping or Piedmont Ave for other restaurants.
Waterfront area with ferry connections to SF. Restaurants, hotels, and plazas.
Hiking amongst the Redwoods and panoramic views. One of our favorites to see the trees: Tres Sendas trail. The Sunset trail in the adjacent Joaquin Miller Park is also nice.
Small kids theme park along the edge of Lake Merritt.
Oakland's historic movie palace. If you see a movie in Theater 1, you get to experience the beautiful stage set architecture. Visit at night to see the large marquee and lobby lighting. The pipe organ plays Friday and Saturday evenings in the large theater.
Walk along the tidal bay beach on Alameda - the neighboring city and island to Oakland. Check out downtown Alameda along Park Ave.
Various wineries, breweries, and distilleries are located on the former Navy Air Base. Good views across the bay to SF and interesting to explore the former base and architecture.
Park area in the middle of the 2nd largest west coast port terminal. Views of San Francisco across the bay. Watch the boats come and go and check out the huge cranes at the port.
Take the bay ferry to San Francisco (or back). Great way to see the bay from the water and to go see the Ferry Building or sights in San Francisco.
Street festival and open art galleries every first Friday of the month (May 5th!). Recommend walking along Telegraph Ave then ducking into the great galleries along 25th Street in old auto warehouses. Food and drinks available throughout.
Walk and explore the many restaurants along College Ave. Take BART to Rockridge Station. Walk either south or north along College Ave and try different stores, restaurants, and bars or coffee shops along the way. Most things to see are located south of Alcatraz Ave and north of Broadway. - a full mile plus of distance to explore.
