Isole Bella (literally 'Beautiful Island') is a place that blew us away and we hope we will be able to organise a day drip there. Everything on the island has been designed to create a scenic effect, including the Baroque palace but especially the famous Italian-style garden laid out on ten terraces with a “Theatre” made of huge statues, ponds and fountains. The place feels like a magical fairytale, they even have white peacocks wandering around the grounds.
Also knowns as "Fishermen's Island", this small island is one of the most picturesque and it is the only island to be permanently inhabited. It feels like a little old town in the middle of the lake with narrow streets, great restaurants and fantastic views. Very romantic and almost opposite Isole Bella island.
Lake Orta is smaller and less frequently visited lake than its more glamorous neighbours. It is much more intimate and romantic, this little lake is a hidden jewel in the area. There are hardly any tourists and you feel like time has stopped. We hope to take you there on Saturday, as it is short drive from the Western part of Lake Maggiore where Isola Bella & Fisherman's Island are.
The glamorous Lake Como is only 1h drive from Lake Maggiore and definitely worth visiting if you are staying longer in the area. We highly recommend visiting Villa Balbianello which we visited as part of our wedding research in September 2019. It has magnificent views and gardens which have been used as the setting for several movies, including Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Casino Royale and A Month by the Lake.
Cycling around magnificent villages, admiring the views and exploring the local area by bike. Bike hire is available from the Camin Hotel.
For water lovers, apart from swimming (and September is the best time to swim in the lakes!), the hotel Camin offers paddle boarding, kayaking (twin or single), pedalos (some with slides) and a small 5 seater motor boat (no licence required).
