My best friend Leslie and I decided to go to the men's tennis match one Sunday afternoon. Leslie played on the women's team and though it would be fun to go watch them play. We went to the match and while we were watching a singles match, I heard someone yelling over on another court. I asked Leslie, "who is that?" and she told me it was John! I did not think much more of it, until John messaged me on Facebook Messenger (yes, that is how old we are now) and said "thanks for coming to the match!" I immediately told Leslie that he had messaged me and was so excited that he even knew I was there! We planned to hang out the next night and the rest is history! A fun fact about John is that he was the first guy in college to ask me out on a real date. That is when I knew that I wanted to marry him!
John planned the proposal about one month ahead of time, keeping me in the dark, while letting our friends and family in on the secret! He chose a very stressful school week for me to propose so that I would be just distracted enough not to suspect anything. The night of the proposal, he took me to this Greek restaurant that we had not been to in a long time. We were in the middle of dinner, when our friend Tanner called John and told him to meet him and his girlfriend, Amber at the UpRoom (a rooftop bar) at the Robey hotel. John knew I would jump at the chance to go meet them because the UpRoom was my favorite place in Chicago! So we finished dinner and went to the UpRoom. Once we got up there, John told the host that we were meeting Tanner. The host brings us to this empty table outside and Tanner was nowhere to be found. I didn't think anything of Tanner not being there because Tanner is always late to things! So we walked over to the ledge and looked out at the beautiful view of the city. John was behind me slightly so we he tapped me on the shoulder and was down on one knee, I finally knew what was going on!
