Chris and I were in our first year at Howard when I told his friend that I'd marry him someday. There was only one problem–we'd never met, let alone spoken to one another. She laughed it off, but I was manifesting my future in the only way I knew how! A year later, I needed to borrow a textbook, so I posted on our school's Facebook group hoping to receive an answer from someone. Chris responded and told me he'd be happy to lend me his book. I asked him to meet me at the school, but I underestimated how long it would take me to walk there. I was 20 minutes late, but he stayed anyway. Weeks later, he asked me out on our first date. We were to meet up at a restaurant called Masa 14 at 7:00 sharp. This time, he was 20 minutes late, but I stayed. Years later we'd joke about how both of us were super hungry during that meal even though we barely touched any of the dishes we ordered. We were nervous because we knew this was different. Days later, I asked Chris to join me on a picnic in Rock Creek Park. I like to think this is what sealed the deal. We've gone on to share a decade's worth of memories–from moving into our first NYC apartment and adopting our Shih Tzu, Basil, to owning our first home together in the Bay. We look back at our law school days with complete fondness and awe. I am so thankful that he had that textbook, and he is so glad that I asked to borrow it. :)
