That Escalated Quickly

October 4, 2022

The first time we met was not the first time we had crossed paths, and it was not the meet cute that you'd romanticize. We were formally introduced by Pat Brady at St. Germaine's Cafe in Encinitas. Jocelyn was still religious and Micah was still partying - the introduction passed quickly, and we were reintroduced multiple times over the next year. After a few years of being in each other's periphery, we began attending regular Sunday potlucks (again with Pat - the matchmaker of the decade). Micah noticed Jocelyn first, because of her gray pencil skirt. Jocelyn was terrified of dating, and remained willfully ignorant of any flirting. Month after month, we kept having dinners together. We would be "forced" to couple up among our coupled friends, and began sharing rides, splitting entrees, and getting close. Micah played the long game, despite being told by Pat that Jocelyn's "type" was not him. Micah liked Jocelyn as a person, so he was happy to just stay friends. As we got closer, we decided we should be roommates, since there were *obviously* no romantic feelings. We started spending more time together one-on-one, watching Game of Thrones, drinking whiskey and wine, and talking over Jocelyn's failed dates. Micah was cautious but persistent in inviting Jocelyn to hang out, and Jocelyn appreciated the company and conversations. Jocelyn ended up going away for a weekend with friends close to her and Micah. Throughout the weekend, she can recall saying Micah's name no less than 50 times as she told people all about their friendship and their plans. On the flight home, she contemplated this and it finally hit her... she LIKED Micah. Panic started to set in, and she decided to open herself up to the opportunity of dating Micah. Jocelyn began watching more Game of Thrones with Micah, and the distance between them on the couch got smaller and smaller over the next week. Each night, Jocelyn would go home confused about whether she had missed her chance or if Micah was just being sweet. Micah would shake his head because it had been made clear to him that he was not Jocelyn's "type". But after a few more episodes and long conversations, we both figured it out. The relationship was then set in motion by the question "Can I trust you?" and the statement "I'm going to date you as long as I want to date you!", and now almost four years later we are still going strong!
