How We Met

Jewish Organizations: Where friendships are forged, holidays are celebrated, and every now and then, unexpected love stories blossom—like ours.

Jillian was a Hoboken Moishe House host and needed to assemble a team of three for the upcoming year. Jillian's friend, who knew Elvin from high school, spoke highly of him and insisted that he would be the perfect addition to their trio. That’s how it all began… As we worked to complete the application process, we spent hours on the phone, and that was when our connection began to blossom. We started calling one another all the time, whether or not we needed to discuss Moishe House. Elvin fell for Jillian's family-oriented and caring nature, and we quickly realized how closely our values and life goals aligned. But, with the uncertainty of the Moishe House application looming, Jillian distanced herself. At the time, her priority was Moishe House. Knowing that, if the application were approved, Jillian and Elvin would be co-workers and roommates, Jillian was totally against pursuing a relationship with him. Despite this, Jillian couldn't stop herself from falling for Elvin's kindness, humor, and wealth of random facts. Luckily, despite 3 declined date proposals and countless unanswered texts, Elvin remained persistent in his pursuit… Then, on June 18, 2021, we met with the Moishe House manager and received news that our application was approved! Immediately after the meeting, Elvin called Jillian and told her that he did not want our involvement with Moishe House to hinder the possibility of something more. Elvin offered to continue living with his parents on Staten Island, rather than taking his spot in the Moishe House: he literally uprooted his plans and decided not to move to Hoboken all for her. Jillian was thrilled—and, for the first time, she admitted she liked Elvin, too. Later that evening, we went to a Shabbat dinner party. When Jillian arrived, Elvin handed her a card for her brother’s Bar Mitzvah, which was the following day: a gesture that foreshadowed the kindness and thoughtfulness Elvin would continue to exhibit throughout our relationship. At that time, Elvin didn’t know that Jillian would invite him to attend the Bar Mitzvah as her plus one, but she did—and insisted that he attend. The next day, June 19th, 2021, Elvin went above and beyond to make it to the Bar Mitzvah. With less than 4 hours to spare, Elvin went from Highland Park, where he stayed the night, to Staten Island to purchase a tuxedo, a massive bouquet of flowers, and a thoughtful gift for Jillian’s parents, too. Elvin’s unwavering courtship, effort, and courtesy persisted over the years, earning him praise from Jillian and her family, who to this very day regularly receive messages proclaiming, "Elvin is the best!" and "Everyone needs an Elvin." From that day forward, we embarked on our journey together—a journey filled with laughter, love, adventure, travel, hard-work, and endless joy.
