Our Story

July 16, 2021

We met in a very traditional way... Girl goes to Mexico for a bachelorette trip, Guy goes to Mexico for a birthday party, both happen to be from Denver, CO end up at the same resort... and then fall in love. Totally normal, right? Neither of us could have imagined at the time that we'd end up dating, let alone get engaged! But we couldn't be happier or more in love. Here is how it all happened... ------------- Jess was going to Playa Del Carmen for one of her friends bachelorette trips (shout out Audrey!). Fun fact - she almost didn't make it. Her passport was delayed for months and after MANY phone calls and emails she was finally able to get an appointment at the passport office the day before her flight - talk about cutting it close. Passport in hand, she was off to Mexico. WJ was going to Playa Del Carmen that same weekend for one of his friend's 30th birthday parties (Shout out Britt!). Fun fact - he also almost didn't make it...someone snoozed the alarm one too many times that morning :) But off he went. Friday July 16: Jess was hanging out at the hotel pool with her girlfriends, when two friendly gentlemen swam by them (shout out John and Vance!). They struck up a conversation, and asked where the girls were from. Jess said she was from Denver, while the rest of the girls said Austin, TX. John and Vance said "what a coincidence - we're also from Denver!" They pointed to their cabana, told us to stop by and say hi to the rest of their group (also from Denver), and then went on their way. However, Jess and the girls just wanted to do their own thing and thought they probably wouldn't see those guys again. Flash forward 4 hours, and a *few* tequila drinks later... Jess and her girlfriends were on their poolside patio. John grabs WJ and said "see that girl, she is single, and you're going to go talk to her" (How John knew she was single is still a mystery). It's important to note that WJ was 13th wheeling it on this trip with 6 couples + him, so the guys were just trying to help him find a...friend. Lo and behold, John and WJ show up at Jess' patio with a bottle of tequila in hand. Jess and John started talking about where they went out the night before. She told John she found this great place to go dancing, and said she'd text him the name of it. John then said "no, why don't you text it to my friend WJ!". At this point, Jess had never spoken to WJ, so she was a little confused. Then she started putting two and two together and said to WJ "let me guess, you're single, and I'm single, and this is just going to work out??" to which John quickly replied for the both of them and said "YES!". Well, Jess and WJ got to talking, and the chemistry was a hit from the start. They danced the weekend away in Mexico, and left wondering if they'd ever see each other again (kind of like that best friend you make in the bathroom at a bar and say you're going to hang out, but then never do). But WJ knew he couldn't let her get away that easily. When they got back to Denver, WJ asked her on a proper first date - suggesting a wine and tapas bar (does he know the way to her heart or what?). They ended up staying there for 4 hours talking, laughing, and picking up right where they left off. They both left thinking wow, maybe this wasn't just a Mexico fling. They continued to get to know each other, date, travel, fall in love... and two years later he popped the question! Against all odds, Jess and WJ met in Mexico, and couldn't be more excited to have you all celebrate with them back where it all started - in Mexico!
