Bas's father was the summer chaplain of a small church on the golf course in Biddeford Pool. This brought the Souder family to Maine for about 20 Augusts in the 60's and 70's. Jay spent summers there in her youth in the family house that now belongs to her sister, Christy. Bas's sister, Marshall and Jay have maintained a lifelong friendship. They traveled around the world together in the early 80's and have been besties ever since. Christy and Bas's older sister, Ann also have a lifelong friendship so it's no wonder that Bas fit smoothly into the fold. His love of sailing, hiking, and just plain being outdoors mirrored Jay's interests so when he took a chance to look Jay up on his visit to Maine a while back, he realized the chemistry was strong and his heart opened up to new and marvelous possibilities with her. As luck, or God would have it, they fell in love. Bas moved out of Chicago after 40+ years and into a sleepy neighborhood with Jay in Yarmouth. Jay's mother said before she died last June that she wanted Jay and Bas to live in her place. That's just what they did and have made it their nest full of light, comfort, and warmth. The transitions were seamless and their love palpable in their communities of Blueberry Cove and St. Bart's church. Their children, Coale and Rosie and Christine are so supportive and will hopefully stand by them forever.
