Our story

We first met at the young adults group at Community Church in February 2022. We had been involved with the church since it opened in 2020, and are even both in the same picture from the first Sunday service, but our paths had never crossed close enough until that group. On that first night we sat across from each other and somehow Sailor immediately knew that I was going to be her husband, though she waited a while to tell me that. The first thing I noticed about her was how beautiful she was and how much I loved her smile. There was a very quick friendship and we connected on so many levels over the next few months. Eventually she wrote me a note expressing how she felt about me. Unfortunately I was still working through some things and couldn't see what was right in front of me, so I decided that we should stay friends. It took about 3 months for me to realize the mistake I had made, it all seemed to click that there was something big here and I just hadn’t been able to recognize it before. I started trying to build our friendship up again and to find out if she still had those feelings from a few months before. I thankfully wasn’t taking the hints that she was not interested and instead wrote her a similar note to the one she wrote me asking her out again, to which she agreed. Our first actual date was on Tuesday, July 12. I picked Sailor up, impressed her with my door opening abilities, and brought her to Solbol - the same place she had suggested in her note because I had never been there before. We started right off with her wanting to find out exactly what had happened, and then she proceeded to tell me that she felt she needed at least 6 months before she could date anyone. I was pretty bummed about that but I had this feeling that no matter how long I had to wait, it would be worth it. Of course that didn’t mean I wanted to wait that long, and as we continued our date walking around Argyle Park (which felt weird continuing a date with someone who just told me they couldn’t date me), I gradually slipped in some ideas about a 3 month time frame instead. We ended with the idea that we could still spend some time getting to know each other but wouldn’t officially start dating for at least a little while. 4 days later Sailor invited me to a volunteer outreach she was involved with out in Riverhead. I picked her up to drive together and we had a great time serving. Afterwards we walked around a ranch and got caught in the rain, decided to head out to Orient Point Beach and got caught in the rain again, and by the time we stopped for a late lunch in Greenport we admitted to each other that this was in fact a date. From then on we rarely went more than a few days without spending time together, and right from the very beginning felt a connection that has only grown stronger. I knew I loved her and that I was going to marry her from a few weeks in, yet she’ll still say she knew longer… also that I should have kissed her in the rain on our second “date” instead of waiting until we went to All American and kissing her after eating a burger… but she still agreed to marry me so I think I did okay.

For all the days along the way
