At the beginning of the summer in 2016 at the end of Mia’s sophomore year in college, she was celebrating the end of a college gymnastics season at a teammate’s (Braie Swann, bridesmaid) and a friend’s (Samantha Marks, bridesmaid) house. Braie’s husband (Sam Swann, best man) was best friends with Jake, so Jake and Mia ended up at the same place at the same time. They started out as friends, and Jake started pursuing Mia as more than friends after about a year passed. Mia felt like the timing wasn’t right and continued to keep Jake in the “friend zone” although many friends were suspicious that there was something more between them. One of our favorite things to look back on and laugh about during this time was the fact that Jake would text Mia cheesy pickup lines almost every day (ask him to tell you one!) Finally, in April of 2018 (almost TWO years later!!!) Mia admitted to Braie that she had the same feelings for Jake that he had for her. After many pep talks from Braie, Mia got the courage to tell Jake and then they started officially dating a month later on May 1, 2018.
Jake went out of his way to give me an unforgettable proposal and he did not disappoint! Let me start by saying that I am HARD to surprise and I always pay attention to little details and notice when something is off. I was in shock for weeks after the proposal happened and couldn’t believe that I genuinely had no idea! This was all thanks to Jake (he knew he had to do some over-the-top planning for me to be surprised), both of our parents, a lot of loyal friends, and some random acts of kindness from strangers along the way! We got engaged on December 19, 2020 overlooking the Mississippi River and the iconic “Memphis Bridge” which we had discovered while dating had been one landmark that sat between us our entire lives (Jake grew up in Central Arkansas and Mia in Memphis area). Special shoutout to our moms for all their help and to Amanda Ralston who captured the moment for us! -Mia
