While living in Honolulu pursuing graduate school, a classmate kept inviting Elizabeth over to her apartment. She said there were two guys in the apartment below her and that they loved to BBQ and have poker nights. Elizabeth assumed these “guys” were old creeps and didn’t think twice every time she declined the invitation. Then, one day, just weeks before the COVID-19 Hawaii shut-down, Elizabeth was dropping off her friend at the apartment when two guys walked out to the driveway. The one, Devon, gave Elizabeth a big friendly hug and introduced himself. The other one, Ryan, extended his hand for a very formal handshake. Only a few days later, Elizabeth was out at a bar with friends. They were laughing and playing a game when the same two guys walked into the bar… Devon and Ryan sat down and joined. Ryan and Elizabeth reintroduced themselves. They chatted about their mutual love for food and cooking. To which Ryan claimed, “I bet I can name more types of cheeses than you.” Ryan clearly didn’t know who he was talking to. Eventually, after several minutes of listing various cheeses, he realized he had no chance of beating her. Later on, he asked for her phone number and they said goodbye. The next morning, Elizabeth woke up to a text from an unknown number saying, “You forgot Ricotta!” Since that day, they have been loving every minute of life together.
