The Meet Cute

I'll never forget it... The first time I met Emily, it was at the beginning of my Master's. I remember walking through the practice room hallway at Loyola University New Orleans and seeing her beautiful red hair through the glass door. I knocked and asked, "Whatcha singing?" "Berlioz's Les nuits d'été" she said. A song cycle of Summer Nights and the seasons of love. From there I got to know Emily through classes, opera rehearsals, and conversations backstage during Mahler's Symphony No. 2. As our friendship blossomed, I invited her over to play a game of Monopoly with friends. That was October 4th, now our anniversary, as it was the day that we discovered our feelings for each other. Though that evening didn't start as a date, I now consider it one of the most significant and wonderful evenings I could have asked for. - Spencer

The Proposal

So, I love a good surprise...

After our move to Manhattan, we planned a trip back to the city of our first home together, New Orleans. For our 7th anniversary, Spencer wanted to take me to dinner, though he wouldn't provide any details of the restaurant. On the evening of our anniversary dinner, he revealed that the restaurant was in the French Quarter, so we boarded a streetcar and rode amongst the live oak trees and mansions lining the famed St. Charles Avenue. Once we arrived at the French Quarter, Spencer and I walked along N. Rampart, though suddenly Spencer realized we had gone too far and passed our turn. As he looked at a map, I noticed a photographer capturing the beauty of Louis Armstrong Park, adorned with the famous lit arch that marked its entrance. I turned to usher Spencer out of the way of the photographer, but he was already on one knee. From here, my memories falter from the overwhelming euphoria. I have no recollection of what his words were, but I know my answer, and I was ready to spend the rest of my days with this incredible man. Spencer and I spent the next hour reveling in our love as the photographer, whom Spencer had actually hired, followed us around the French Quarter to some of our favorite locations. As we made our way to Tujague's Restaurant, Spencer revealed that there was one final surprise. Sitting in the candle-lit dining room, both our families had gathered at Spencer's request to celebrate this incredible moment together. I shed a lot of happy tears during this beautiful evening. I am forever grateful for this kind and thoughtful human being that knows me so well and cares for me so deeply. I'm ready for the rest of our lives. -Emily
