Question

Looking for fun activities? Here are our top picks for exploring Cartagena!

Answer

The best way to appreciate the city’s stunning architecture and vibrant culture is on foot. Join a guided tour or explore the charming Old Town at your own pace. *Remember to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen while you’re out and about!* VISIT THE WALLED CITY: Bursting with color, history, and fantastic photo opportunities. Don't miss the delicious fruit popsicles at nearby shops! EXPLORE CASTILLO SAN FELIPE DE BARAJAS: This impressive fortress not only provides panoramic views of Cartagena but also a fascinating glimpse into its history. VISIT THE ROSARIO ISLANDS: *A must if you can!* Rent a boat and explore Las Islas del Rosario. This stunning archipelago, with 28 idyllic islands and reefs, is protected as part of Colombia’s only underwater national park. Enjoy the vibrant marine life, pristine white beaches, and activities like snorkeling, relaxing, and savoring delicious local cuisine. Or spend the day at one of the LUXURY BEACH CLUBS in Las Islas del Rosario. Our top picks include: BORA BORA: Get a ticket to spend the day in the VIP area, which includes restaurant service. Entry is by reservation only, and availability can sell out quickly, so reserve in advance! Note that children are not allowed. MANGATA: With a calmer atmosphere, this beach club features two spectacular ocean viewpoints. Towel service is included. SEE THE SUNSET AT CAFÉ DEL MAR: Here, you'll catch breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea at sunset. Arrive early to get a great spot!

Question

There's always room for shopping!

Answer

LA SERREZUELA is a must-visit. A unique shopping mall in Cartagena built around a historic theater and bullring, it's now a modern shopping and entertainment complex that preserves its historical beauty. Located in the San Diego neighborhood within the Old City! Find charming shops throughout the Walled City, such as LAS BÓVEDAS. This area, set in former jail cells, offers an array of classic Colombian souvenirs. Locals expect you to negotiate, and it’s all part of the experience!

Question

What are some must-try dishes of Cartagena?

Answer

Get ready to eat a lot! Here are our favorite dishes. Don’t miss the chance to try them all! CEVICHE: Fans of this dish will love the delicious variations. COCTEL DE CAMARONES (SHRIMP COCKTAIL): One the most popular shrimp cocktail kiosks is El Sombreron Osteria. It is topped with a giant Colombian hat ("sombrero vueltiao"). MOJARRA FRITA: A deep-fried whole Mojarra (white fish). It often comes with COCONUT RICE (our fave rice of all!) and PATACONES (smashed and salty deep-fried plantains). POSTA NEGRA CARTAGENERA: Beef roast cooked in a sweetened marinade that includes Coca-Cola and brown sugar ("panela"). COLOMBIAN STREET FOOD: Great for any time of day! Arepas - Make sure to ask for "suero" on the side. Empanadas - Make sure you add the "pique." Carimañolas - Yuca fritter stuffed with meat or cheese Pan de Bono Deditos de Queso - Cheese sticks LIMONADA DE COCO (COCONUT LIMEADE): A popular drink you’ll find at almost every restaurant. We like to add our favorite rum in Cartagena, "El Dictador." COCADAS: Highly popular treats in Cartagena, sweetened balls of finely shredded coconut infused with flavors like passionfruit, mango, and guava. One of the best places to buy them is at the "Portal de los Dulces," found immediately upon entering the gate of the Walled Old Town, the "Torre del Reloj" (Clock Tower). ENYUCADO: Andrea's fave! A type of coconut cake found in the Caribbean Region of Colombia, made with yuca, cheese, and sometimes anise. EXOTIC FRUITS: Enjoy a perfectly ripe piece of exotic fruit from one of the "palenqueras." These brightly dressed women balance bowls of fruit on their heads, and make quick work of your fruit, chopping and slicing it for you.
