I remember I was sitting with Cody in the airport terminal waiting to board our plane. It was October 28, 2022. I saw Cody look over at a girl in an Auburn sweatshirt. We didn’t know it at the time, but this was Danielle. I thought she was a business woman because she was working on her laptop before we got on the plane. I remember we got on the plane, and I joked with Cody that everyone on this plane was going to be Mormon since it was going to Salt Lake City, Utah. We got to our assigned seats—Cody had the aisle seat, and I had the middle. Then, Dani came and sat down in her seat across the aisle from Cody. Cody let her sit down before working his magic. He asked her if she went to Auburn, and Dani answered bluntly, “no….my sister does.” Then, she turned and faced forward. I thought in my head, “well, he tried.” A minute later, however, I heard them start talking again about where they are going and why. Danielle shared how she was going to a friend’s wedding in Salt Lake City, and Cody told Dani about how we were part of a church planting team in Phoenix, Arizona. We just ended up with a connecting flight to Salt Lake City. Then, she asked the question, “what kind of church?” I thought this would be when he would lose her since we thought everyone on the plane was probably Mormon. Cody said, “well, we are with NAMB which is Southern Baptist.” Suddenly, Dani’s face lit up, and she shared how she grew up overseas. Truthfully, this is when I knew Dani was sent by God to Cody. They spent the rest of the flight talking all about missions, church planting, sharing life stories, and lots of other things. At one point in the flight, Dani got up to go to the restroom. I hit Cody on the arm and told him he had to get her number. After about the third or fourth hit, Cody stopped me and said, “dude, chill; I got this.” Our flight landed, and we told Danielle it was a pleasure to meet her. We were walking off of the plane now, and I was still pestering Cody about getting her number. I thought Cody was going to let her walk away! As we were about to part ways, he finally asked her for her number, and she gave it to him. Over the next few weeks, they texted everyday and started to FaceTime occasionally. I’m sure Cody got tired of me asking about how it was going. Since Cody and I shared a room, sometimes I would hear them talk; I was excited to see their friendship growing. I knew it was budding into something more! A couple of months later, Cody went to see family in Alabama. He told me that while he was going to be in the south, he was going to see Dani and go to a concert. This turned out to be their first date! After he got back, Cody and Dani started to FaceTime more regularly. I could tell it was serious when Cody started pausing the shows we were watching to talk to Dani on the phone. I remember the first time I heard him say “I love you” to Dani. We were riding in his truck and he ended their phone call with those three words. I said “wow, ‘I love you?’” and he replied, “I do. I love her.” Over the course of the next months and year, their love grew for one another. Through many texts, phone calls, FaceTimes, and brief visits, it became clear the Lord had brought these two people together for a reason. They were made for one another. As a result, on December 9, 2023, Cody got down on one knee and asked the question, “will you marry me?” Now, they will meet together on April 21, 2024 at the end of an aisle to say “I do”. And to think, it all started in two seats across an aisle.
