Andrew: Olivia and I first met at a small group at my church. There were some new people there so I suggested an ice breaker that I often do, “What is one of the times you’ve laughed the hardest in your life?” I told a story about when I zip-tied a friend to his desk in high school and when we got to Liv she told a story about how she made a teacher so mad that their filling fell out. She was going on and on and on, so I said jokingly, “Ok! That’s enough outta you!” She thought that was so funny, and I was dying at how perfectly she had captured this story. A few weeks later I gave her my phone to put her number in because I had “a funny John Mulaney clip” that I “needed” to send her. We had our first date a few weeks later and I went around describing it as the best (6 hour) first date of my life, and we were off!
Olivia: When Andrew and I first started dating, I "casually asked" Andrew how long he would want to date someone before they were to get engaged. I knew pretty shortly after meeting and going out with Andrew that I wanted to marry him so I had some vested interest in the answer to the question. His response was that he thought by the time a year rolled around that he would know whether the relationship was made to last. Without thinking, I looked at him, cocked an eyebrow and said "Happy Thanksgiving..." referencing when we would be together for a year. I died of embarrassment and he cracked up, after the genuine shock subsided. True to form, and because he is genuinely the funniest person I've ever met, he would bring it up every so often to remind me of my unfiltered, all-cards-on-the-table moment. It was horrible and hilarious. In July, Andrew began resurfacing the "happy thanksgiving" comment after we had started talking seriously about marriage. Based on this, my understanding was that he would propose around Thanksgiving, as a nod to my comment, but also because one of Andrew's defining characteristics is that he is true to his word. If he said a year it would be a year. Anytime we talked about getting engaged he would say, "Happy Thanksgiving" and totally throw me off the scent of his real plans. Instead, he planned a get away up to an A-frame in the White Mountains with my family the weekend before my birthday. On the 17th of October, he got down on one knee on top of Cathedral Ledge looking out over Echo Lake and asked me to marry him with the most gorgeous ring. Completely shocked, I said "are we engaged?" He said, "You have to say yes!" I said yes and we arrived back at the A-frame to be met by both our families and a little engagement party. It was magic.
We are getting married at Olivia's parent's home in Acton, MA. We hope you join us virtually!
