Venue History
The Neo-Classical home shown in the first picture, locally known as the Admiral’s House was built in 1905 for the Commandant of the Charleston Navy Yard. Officially called Quarters A, the house boasts features that are indicative of its residents’ high rank. The Renaissance Revival structure known as Quarters H-I (pictured on bottom left corner) was also built in 1905 to house the offices of the Commandant and his staff, as well as the Captain of the Yard.
The Charleston Naval Base provided defense for the United States from its formation in 1901 to its closure in 1996. Originally designated as the Navy Yard and later as the Naval Base it had a large impact upon the local community, the tri-county area and the entire State of South Carolina.
Pictured on the bottom right corner is JFK (dated May 2, 1942). At the time, Kennedy was assigned to the Naval Station Charleston branch of the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor of the Central Intelligence Agency.
