How We Met

January 12, 2018

Spencer and I first met on Tinder, we both swiped right and honestly the rest is history! On our first date, Spencer’s nerves got the best of him as he ran over my mailbox and spilled a vase full of flowers on his lap. According to Spencer, his first thoughts included 1) chalk this one up as a lost and drive away, 2) play the hero and offer to fix her mailbox that some “’jerk” must have hit, 3) call her and listen to her reaction before knocking on the door or 4) sit in her driveway and sulk over the bent frame and dented tailgate of my beloved truck. Thankfully, he chose the 3rd option and little did we know that’d be our last first date. After our evening was over, Spencer handed me a little glass heart and asked me to “never break his heart.” Three years later, the little glass heart remains on my nightstand and is a daily reminder of our love.

The Proposal

April 18, 2020

It was Saturday and Spencer was supposed to be going to work. We kissed goodbye and he left like normal. About an hour later, he returned with a Polaris slingshot and asked me to pack a picnic. Now you’d think that at this point I would have known something was up, but this wasn’t totally out of the ordinary and he had been asking to rent the car for quite a while. Of course, a proposal had crossed my mind, but Spencer was acting way too calm and hadn’t mentioned anything about the ring (he’s the worst secret/present keeper!). So, this wasn’t the time, and that was okay, but I was totally thinking of snarky remarks in my head to say after our night was over to let him know he once again missed a perfect opportunity. In a race to catch the sunset, we hurried to Pretty Place only to find that the access road and chapel were closed due to COVID. Breaking the rules, we parked on the side of the road and sprinted to the chapel so we could enjoy the little bit of sunlight we had left. As we gazed over the mountains and took in the sunset, I noticed Spencer started to get a little tense. After a few minutes, a big gulp, and a deep breath, he asked!

When We Knew

When She Knew: I knew after our second weekend together when we both unknowingly left each other surprise love notes. I distinctly remember calling my mom and starting to cry after finding the note on my bathroom sink. When He Knew: Being a country boy, born and raised in North Carolina, I’m an avid fan of country music. When Christina and I met, I knew I was falling in love when I was singing every song on radio like Kenny Chesney and thinking of her. I didn’t care about the looks from people while I blasted away with the windows down at a red light singing Heaven by Kane Brown. But the icing on the cake was when we were on our second or third date (which dates for us lasted all 3 days during the weekend since I lived 2 hours away in NC), and we were at a ma and pa diner after she brought me to Catholic Church (I’m Baptist). After sitting down and ordering, an old lady came to our table and asked how long we had been married because we were so in love. It was then that I knew what true love was, and that I didn’t just feel it, but it was visible.
