Things To Do

Durango is a special place. Nestled at the foot of the San Juan Mountains and Weeminuche Wilderness to the north, Durango began as an Old West railroad town - the gateway to the high Rockies. The red rock desert of Utah stretches to the west towards Moab, and the high desert of New Mexico borders to the south. Today, Durango is a vibrant micropolitan community with high-end restaurants, a thriving nightlife scene, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Whether you're looking to raft a Class IV river, ride old mining trails on horseback, or check out the awe-inspiring Indigenous city of Mesa Verde, Durango has so much to offer! Durango offers plentiful opportunities for hiking and exploring the San Juan Mountains. Some of our favorite hiking trails are outlined below, and additional information for trailhead location and exact details are easily findable by searching on the AllTrails App or Googling the name of the trail. Colorado Trail @ Junction Creek - The southernmost leg of the Colorado Trail, this easy hike is great for first-time hikers. Spud Lake - Moderate hike, suitable for inexperienced hikers. Trail ends at Spud Lake, a high-altitude mountain lake surrounded by peaks and filled with rainbow trout. Ice Lakes - For folks looking for more of a challenge, Ice Lakes is a longer route deep into the San Juan Mountains that ends at the crystal clear high-altitude waters of the Icy Lakes.
