Durango offers plentiful opportunities for hiking and exploring the San Juan Mountains. Some of our favorite hiking trails are outlined below, and additional information for trailhead location and exact details are easily findable by searching on the AllTrails App or Googling the name of the trail. Colorado Trail @ Junction Creek - The southernmost leg of the Colorado Trail, this easy hike is great for first-time hikers. Spud Lake - Moderate hike, suitable for inexperienced hikers. Trail ends at Spud Lake, a high-altitude mountain lake surrounded by peaks and filled with rainbow trout. Ice Lakes - For folks looking for more of a challenge, Ice Lakes is a longer route deep into the San Juan Mountains that ends at the crystal clear high-altitude waters of the Icy Lakes.
Mild to Wild offers whitewater rafting excursions, ranging from the Lower Animas through Durango (perfect for novice & intermediate rafters) as well as the Upper Animas which provides big rapids and unparalleled thrills.
The filming location for the final scene of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Bakers Bridge is a core part of growing up in Durango. Surrounded by tall cliffs and deep blue water, Bakers is a wonderful spot for picnicking and hanging out in the San Juan Mountains. Don't jump off any cliffs or bridges without a local guide!
