It all started when John thought that Heather was her twin sister, Madeline. He greeted her with an angry, "I DID NOT GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO DYE YOUR HAIR!" Heather stopped, stared, then said, "I am not who you think I am, I'm Heather not Madeline." John was dumbfounded, twins?! He was mortified at the mistake he made. Obviously Heather forgave him (otherwise we wouldn't be here).
A hot day at the Minnesota State Fair, 6 hours in. John had managed to get Heather's Sister, Mother and Father there all while Heather was under the impression she was the one who invited them all. The day itself leading up to the proposal was grueling; John's shoulder was hurting him but he couldn't relinquish his heavy backpack to Heather because that's where the ring and bouquet of wooden roses was! Heather tried to grab stuff out of the backpack several times, but John and Ali were terrified the surprise would be ruined and would snatch it away before Heather could grab it. Heather was very confused but brushed it off. Finally, they reached the Bremer Bank Gazebo and Heather and Maddie stopped to take a photo. John walked toward Heather with a bouquet of wooden flowers and Heather asked, "Are you doing what I think you're about to do?" John nodded, knelt down on one knee, and Heather started crying. The rest is history.
