How We Met

#happilyeverbrightman2019

We first met at church. In passing, we were introduced by then Pastor, Dr. Gloria White (Allen) in 2014, when Kevin was there to fill in as the musician on fourth Sunday. We exchanged quick pleasantries and that was the extent of our initial meeting. The fourth Sunday fill ins continued and Kevin later became the permanent musician. What strikes me about our initial meeting is that to this day, Kevin remembers what I was wearing. I believe everything happens for a reason. I believe a series of divine interventions took place that caused Kevin and I to end up at the same place at the same time. Even more importantly, I believe in the power and movement of the Holy Spirit that held us in the place where we met, became friends and eventually fell in love.

The Proposal

December 22, 2018

As Kevin and I prepared to go to a birthday party for the husband of one of his childhood friends, we were talking about the future when he asked me what type of house, I wanted us to live in. The blank expression on my face had been similar previous times we talked about "the future" minus much discussion about getting married. The expressions on my face during these times always seemed to amuse Kevin, and he'd say, "One day I'm going to show you". Well, this was the day. The next thing I know, Kevin is reaching on top of the book shelf in the living room and pulls out a small box. What's significant about his reaching for the box is that it was nestled behind the picture frame of a poem my late mother had given me, like one she'd given all my siblings. With the box in hand, Kevin turns around, drops to one knee and asks, "Theresa will you Marry Me"? At that instant, all I could do was cry. Not one of those composed cries; rather, one of those bustling cries that looked more like me needing a brown paper bag to keep from hyperventilating than simply shedding a few tears of joy. Yeah, you know that ugly cry with tears and snot running down my face as if in a race to escape. I must have cried for what seemed like twenty minutes. Finally, Kevin, who was still on one knee, jumped in when I again took a breath trying to compose myself, asked, “Well, will you?” “Yes! Yes! Yes!” What makes this day even more memorable is that we still made it to the party albeit late. My eyes were red and face puffy from crying. I looked like a Pound Puppy. Midways through the evening Kevin told his childhood friend, Fela James Jackson that he had proposed and she in turn made the announcement to tall the party guests. December 22, 2018 will forever be a date etched in my mind and on my heart. I said yes! #happilyeverbrightman2019 See you in Charleston!
