Diplomacy is the art of bringing people together-in more ways than one. Brecken first noticed Haley as the “well-dressed” teaching assistant in BYU’s Model United Nations class, while Haley quickly recognized his stand-out academic talents. Later, the program assigned them to represent France together at the conference in NYC. During their preparation meetings, their conversations drifted to more personal topics, from roommate problems to a personal affinity for accordion folders. In New York, the two spent 16 hours a day together in and out of competition; Brecken fit right in with Haley’s family. After a week of flirty notes, sneaking looks, dominating the competition, and learning to work together and appreciate each other, Haley slept on Brecken’s shoulder on the flight home. After New York, the two were inseparable. While watching a gifted bootleg of Hamilton, Brecken held Haley’s hand. They decided to date, despite Brecken’s upcoming mission in May. After a few short weeks of school and a trip to visit Haley’s family in California, they separated for two years. Brecken served his mission in Lima, Peru. Haley studied in Spain, Jerusalem, and London. They wrote, platonically, but the impact of that short time together remained. Two years later, they met again-both changed people but foundationally the same. Brecken called Haley every night after getting home. She attended his homecoming; he visited her in California. They started officially dating just two weeks after Brecken’s return. Through a summer apart, a semester at BYU, and more, the two have had adventures, made memories, spent countless hours together, laughed a lot, and fell even more in love. They returned to New York where Brecken surprised Haley, proposing in front of UN Headquarters-where it all began- and she said yes! On August 3rd, 2019, Brecken and Haley will be married for time and all eternity in the Newport Beach, California Temple. The two are beyond thrilled to be together forever.
