Flight
The best airport to fly into.
Flight
South Bend has its own airport, but expect to add at least $300 on top of any flight path you would take to O'Hare.
Travel Note
Public-transit-heavy, so pack light if you can! Take the CTA Blue Line straight from the Airport to the Washington stop (train every 8 minutes, ride is about 45 minutes), which is $5 (information on single ticket fares here: https://www.transitchicago.com/fares/). Walk to Millennium Station from the Washington stop (5-10 minutes). Finally, take the South Shore Line (2-3 hours ~$13 a ticket, information here: https://www.mysouthshoreline.com/) to the terminal stop, South Bend Airport, from which it will be easy to take an Uber/Lyft to your hotel. South Shore runs on a very rigid, spaced out schedule, so make sure to plan this as soon as you book your plane tickets. Joe: I found the station to be a little tricky to find the first time I came to South Bend, and actually missed my train by two minutes! Would recommend budgeting some solid time to explore Millennium and find the station.
Travel Note
Take an Uber or Lyft to South Bend from O'Hare. Rent a car from O’Hare or SBN: this will enable most freedom to get around in South Bend, as it is NOT a pedestrian-friendly city. Shuttle/bus services: I’ve done this once and it was not a positive experience. Wouldn’t recommend, but they are out there. Plan at your own risk! - Joe
Travel Note
If you’re not renting a car, Uber/Lyft is relatively inexpensive, especially compared to a lot of the cities that many of you are coming from, and oftentimes drivers are using more eco-friendly vehicles. Joe: I would NOT recommend primarily pedestrian travel, unless you are at a downtown hotel; drivers in South Bend are not kind to pedestrians or generally aware of them. If you are an out of towner looking to pool resources with others, we can try to connect you with others you may know that are invited, just reach out!
Travel Note
The same way you got there! You can conveniently retrace whatever steps you took to get to South Bend to get back to where you came from.
Travel Note
Feel free to reach out to Joe (907-460-8991) if you need any help or clarification planning travel! I lived very unconventionally in South Bend for five years and am familiar with all different kinds of travel to, from, and within the town.
