It was the summer of 2020 and many of us were living and working from home, continuing to do what we could to stop the spread of Covid. Some had even returned to their parents’ homes… including us two, and thank goodness for that, because our parents have lived on the very same block for the past 25 years! Despite the extreme proximity of our upbringings, we never really knew each other growing up. But that all changed on one night in August 2020, when Katie’s parents hosted an outdoor “Block-tail Party,” which was a smash hit and surprisingly well-attended. The two of us, along with two new neighbors on the block (shoutout Dan & Scott!), talked and laughed late into the evening. From that night on, a new friendship kindled and Christian began crushing on Katie, big-time. Christian nonetheless wanted to take things slow— he once asked Katie out for drinks and for some reason felt the need to proclaim that “this was not a date.” Katie was perplexed but ultimately relieved— no need to rush things! It would be another year before the friendship would become “something more,” and it happened at, of all places, a Billy Joel cover band concert at Westwood Park. Christian had already done his best to impress Katie that evening, running around with her nephews and wooing Nan… but it was only when the band played their final encore song that the fledgling couple finally embraced for a slow dance. In that moment, we probably both thought “this is crazy!” But then we remembered what Billy himself said.. “You may be right, I may be crazy But it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for!” And before long, we were two lunatics in love!
