Maymont is a beautiful nature center with gardens, animals, and a historic mansion. We love strolling through the Japanese Garden and saying hi to the black bears and bald eagle.
The James River waterfront has miles of beautiful trails. Belle Isle and Brown's Island are two of our favorite places to explore. You can learn about some of the interesting history of Richmond here, and do some adventurous rockhopping on the Belle Isle Dry Rocks or take a hike on the Buttermilk Trail.
The VMFA is two blocks from our first apartment in Richmond, and we've spent countless hours reading, picnic-ing, and socializing in the beautiful sculpture garden. The museum is free to the public. Our favorites include the modern art gallery and their faberge egg collection. Every Friday night there is a free outdoor music event on the lawn!
Richmond has a long and complex history that we've found important to learn about as the city continues to change and move forward.
A Saturday morning staple, the RVA Big Market is our favorite place to get a cold brew coffee and shop local produce and crafts. It is located in the beautiful Bryan Park.
Come check out our neighborhood! Carytown is a lovely stretch full of food, shops, and drinks. Check out Sugar and Twine for breakfast pastries or Chewy's Bagels. Sen or Copolla's Deli are our favorite lunch spots. You can also walk around the Museum District and catch our neighbors hanging on their front porches.
The Fan is a lovely neighborhood in Richmond. It's great to walk around and see the historic row houses. Some of our favorite spots are Scoop Ice Cream, Garnett's for Sandwiches, and Gersi (Italian) or Kuba Kuba (You guess the cuisine) for dinner. Strawberry Street is particularly cute, see if you can find the hidden Scuffletown Park.
Our first breakfast in Richmond was at Sub Rosa in Church Hill. Here you'll find the best croissant in the city, and probably the world. Stroll over to Jefferson Park for a view of the city, or to St. John's Church of Patrick Henry fame. "Give me Croissants or Give Me Death!"
Scott's Addition is Brewery Central. There are legitimately a dozen great breweries, and plenty of good food interspersed. Try ZZQ, the best BBQ for hundreds of miles, or Stella's for great Greek Food. Our favorite breweries are The Veil and Ardent, and Hardywood which is a short drive away.
