The couple met Gio's freshman year of high school and Jose's sophomore year. The earliest memory Jose has is when he noticed Gio's unabashed preoccupation with reading Jane Austen classics in French class (rather than learning French), while Gio often caught sight of Jose's charmingly sarcastic banter with the art teacher they shared. The two remained distanced friends through the years and grew closer in 2020 over their shared love for Christ. The couple officially began dating December 12th of 2020.

The proposal would come one year later on a trip to New York when Jose would propose to Giovanna on bow bridge in central park. While Giovanna looked at the ducks in Central Park Jose was getting ready to propose. He was so nervous and went blank for a couple seconds until he finally got the words out and said, "Will you Marry Me?"
