Alex: "Hey best friend!" DJ: "Hey best friend." In August of 2009, we caught each other's eye in our freshman orientation class at Morgan Park high school. He was the calmest guy in the room, and I was the smiling, brace-face girl. After sharing similar schedules, we developed mutual friendships and did group assignments together. We laughed and played cards with one another. As our bond grew over the years, every morning, I greeted him, "Hey, best friend!". And with a smile, he would reply, "Hey, best friend." One of my girlfriends on the basketball team would always tease us about how we would be together one day. At that moment, I don't know if we were just shy and embarrassed that someone said it out loud, but privately that was what we wanted the most. Prom season was here, and everyone was chattering about who they would ask on prom. I didn't have a date, and doing things outside of tradition was not in my dreams. I took it upon myself and asked my best friend, DJ, who he was taking to prom. I was shocked that he was planning to go with someone else. But I didn't allow that to discourage me. In my attempt to persuade him, I told him if he wasn't going to prom with me, then I wasn't going (I wasn't serious when I said that, I just said that to see what he would say lol). He claimed he was going to ask her, but I knew he wasn't going to. So I continued to follow up with him on whether or not he asked his "potential" prom date to the dance. He was playing around, so I told him he had till the end of the day to ask her, and if he didn't ask her, then he was going on the prom with me. Even though I felt like I had to beg him to be my prom date, as God will have it, in 2013, I was planning my prom with my best friend. We were shopping for suits when I met DJ's mom for the first time, Antionette Hobbs-Davis (God rest her soul). She told me something that affirmed our relationship that would develop into a union. However, I had no idea at the time because DJ and I were just friends. Mama Davis shared that when she met and conversed with my grandmother at the bank. They realized it was a small world because DJ and I attended the same high school. However, without their knowledge, they didn't realize that we were going on prom together. As I hear the voice of my Mama Davis now. She mentioned, "I didn't know then, but God knew what he was doing by bringing your grandmother and me together at the bank". After prom and graduation, we parted ways for the next three years. DJ went to college in Atlanta, and I stayed in Illinois. For a few years, we didn't keep in touch as much, but when I reached out to him, he always replied. He was there for me when I needed a friend the most. So when I transferred schools, I was at the car shop, scrolling through my contact list, and I ran into a specific contact name, "Best friend". From that point on, in April 2017, my best friend and I reconnected and rekindled the seed planted from the beginning. After spending time together, with just the two of us, our love for one another grew stronger and stronger. So much so that we chose to do life together.
On May 21st, for my birthday, DJ took me out for what I believed to be a birthday dinner. I had no idea he was taking me to Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, so I was surprised and happy when we showed up! It made the entire night that he took me there. Anyway, we get a table, order our food, eat, and our waitress brings me a card and a little dessert with a birthday candle. I'm already smiling from ear to ear, opening up a card that I thought this has never happened before when we go out, 😂. I read the card out loud, I saw DJ moving out of the booth, and I read, "Will you marry me?" my jaw dropped to the floor, and I said, "You f*$#n lying!" 😂 and he was on one knee smiling and I said YES! ❤️
