Travel Note
If you’re driving to Woods Hole, you have the option to either take your car on the ferry (reservation required) or park your car at one of the Steamship Authority parking lots and take the free bus shuttle to the ferry terminal. Overnight parking tends to fall around $15-$20 a night. Also remember, if you take the Plymouth & Brocton or the Peter Pan bus service, they will drop you off directly at the ferry terminal. No ferry reservation is required to walk-on - simply show up at any time and purchase a ticket from the ticket office when you arrive. Cost for a walk-on: ~$20 per passenger, round-trip. Ferries generally run every 1hr 15mins. The ferry takes around 45 mins to get to the island and will drop you off in either Vineyard Haven, which is ~20 mins from Edgartown by car, or Oak Bluffs, which is ~15 mins from Edgartown by car. Be sure to check where the ferry is departing from on your way back home! You don’t want to show up in Oak Bluffs only to find out the ferry you’re supposed to be on is leaving from Vineyard Haven…
Flight
While this is by far the quickest and simplest option, it is also the most expensive. Additionally, at this time of year, there are very limited commercial flights to and from the island, so if exploring this option, we recommend booking flights WELL in advance to avoid price increases. In the off-season, the only airports that run direct flights to a from the island are NYC (JFK or LGA) and Boston (Logan). There are also flights from Washington, D.C., but those are less frequent and not direct. If flying in from other places, a connection through Boston is really your only option. Also, keep in mind, you can always fly into Boston and then hop on either the Plymouth & Brocton or the Peter Pan bus to catch a ferry out of Woods Hole. Car services (Uber, etc.) are also options that can take you directly to Woods Hole from Logan, but unsurprisingly, these are expensive. If you choose to fly your way to the Vineyard, rental cars are available at the MVY airport - options are Hertz, Budget, and Avis
Train
By way of train, you can make an Amtrak reservation from Washington, D.C.’s Union Station to Providence, RI or Boston, MA. From there, you can hop on a bus (Plymouth & Brocton or Peter Pan) or book a car service to take you to Woods Hole where you can catch your ferry.
Rental Car
Rental cars are available at the MVY airport - options are Hertz, Budget, and Avis. There is also the islander-owned car rental service, MV Auto Rental (also referred to as A-A Auto Rental) which has convenient locations next to the Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs ferry terminals for walk-on passengers (link below). https://www.mvautorental.com/?utm_source=omg-bing&utm_medium=webclick
