Travel Note
Bogotá has a population of around 11 million people. Like any other large city, Bogota has its safer areas and others you should avoid. It is recommended storing your passport in the hotel safe and when going out, only take what's necessary: avoid wearing jewelry, carrying cameras, and constantly checking your phone or tablet. Uber provides a very good service in Bogotá — take advantage of it! And for added security, avoid going out alone and engaging in conversations with strangers while walking on the street. Bogotá is located at an altitude of 8,660 ft above sea level! The fourth-highest capital city in the world! When you arrive, it is normal to feel fatigued and tired. Try to take it slow the first day upon arrival and stay hydrated.

Rental Car
Uber has a great transportation system in Bogota. When getting an Uber we recommend upgrading your ride to Uber Comfort or Uber XL and beyond to ensure you get a “nicer” car and smoother ride. Avoid taking yellow taxis! From the airport to the hotel — we recommend taking an Uber or arranging private transport (if available) with the hotels recommended below. We do not recommend renting a car, but if you decide to rent one, please be aware that there is a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving (your BAC level has to be at 0 at all times when driving).

Travel Note
The official currency of Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP). Paying via credit card (especially Visa and Mastercard) is accepted mostly everywhere. If paying using Amex you might encounter some smaller vendors who won’t accept it. If paying by card, you will be asked if you would like to be charged in USD or COP. For most credit card providers, you will normally get a better conversion rate if you choose to pay with the local currency (COP). If you would like to pay with cash we recommend exchanging it at the airport or withdrawing Colombian Pesos from a reputable ATM near the hotels. The conversion rate from COP to USD is around 1 COP = .00025 USD. For quick conversion calculations divide the COP amount by 4 and then divide by 1,000. So, if something is worth $125,000 COP = $125,000 / 4 = 31,250 /1,000 = $31.25 USD.
Travel Note
In Colombia it is customary to tip between 10% - 15% when dining out. In many cases the waiter/waitress will ask if you would like tip to be included in your bill, in other cases it will be added automatically.
Travel Note
